Health Benefits of Mistletoe?
Posted by: | Comments
The National Institutes of Health reports that 40 percent of Americans are actively seeking alternative approaches to health. Since this is the time of year that mistletoe begins popping up, I decided to look into any possible health benefits to this potential alternative.
After some investigating, I found that there is no measurable evidence to support claims of a healing effect or improved quality of life from the use of mistletoe extract. So, forget the mistletoe, perhaps, kissing is the key to better health.
It’s been reported that those who kiss their partner goodbye each morning live five years longer than those who don’t. Frequent kissing has scientifically been shown to stabilize cardiovascular activity, as well as decrease blood pressure and cholesterol. Is this why kissing under the mistletoe has been going on for decades? Read More→
Gratitude 101

Here are three truths I’ve found about gratitude:
– Gratitude brings the magnitude of God’s majesty and order into our lives. We live to express God.
– Circumstances and opportunities do not create gratitude. Gratitude creates circumstances and opportunities.
– Gratitude and pain are incompatible. Read More→
Quality of Life: Improved or Worsened by Health Care?
Posted by: | Comments
I respect the great heart, the motive, of every physician and healer. For, I believe, they yearn to improve their patients’ quality of life and care. Yet, is this what’s taking place? Perhaps not — because when it comes to health care, we are learning more is not always better. Sometimes more means that quality of life suffers.
For example, many American primary care physicians believe that their own patients are receiving too much medical care. This was the take-away from a survey of primary-care doctors conducted in 2009. Read More→
“Since Christian Science is weird…”

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to discuss Christian Science with a newspaper editor. After hearing about the religious organization and the system of spiritual health care, she said, “Since Christian Science is weird, it –.” The editor stopped mid-sentence, looked at me, and said, “Oh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to call Christian Science weird. I’m so sorry.”
After the editor apologized several more times, I said, “Forget about it. It’s okay,” and we went back to our pleasant discussion.
The editor’s “Weird” comment reminded me of ’73. In 1973, I was in Brad Shearer‘s kitchen. Brad and I attended high school together. He was a star football player who went on to play for the Texas Longhorns and the Chicago Bears. Read More→
Health: Get over and get some
Posted by: | Comments
Sometimes I feel my health is actually under siege, rather than being helped, by all the drug ads that bombard us on television. Should health care cause that kind of negative reaction, or can it be simpler?
Wouldn’t it be great if health were served next to the desserts at your neighborhood all-you-can-eat buffet chain? Not feeling well? Just jump in line, dish yourself a double dose, and – voilà – all better.
If only it was that simple. Well, believe it or not, there are those who are discovering it might be possible. However, instead of making your way to the buffet, all you really need to take is a trip to the closet. Read More→
The Principle of Health
Posted by: | Comments
There are those who scoff at the idea of turning to God to heal physical ills. I don’t.
I’ve found that prayer can be a practice of acknowledging and applying divine laws or truths to whatever is out of order, rather than what some perceive as the sending out of petitions to a fairy-tale God. The prayer I utilize is Principle based.
Wrong notes that came from the trumpet section of my high school band, as well as, mathematical mistakes made in my checkbook have both taught me the need for applying principles. When the principles of music and math are employed, harmony and balance are achieved.
Also, I’ve found that when it comes to health, there is a divine Principle that is applicable. Read More→
“We have forgotten who made us” – Gov. Perry
Posted by: | Comments
Saturday, at Reliant Stadium, Texas Governor, Rick Perry, said to thousands of worshipers during his prayer rally:
“Our heart breaks for America. We see discord at home, we see fear in the market place, we see anger in the halls of governments, and as a nation we have forgotten who made us.”
Reports say that 30,000 people attended the rally while many more, in hundreds of churches throughout America, watched by simulcast.
Supporters and critics cannot agree on whether or not Perry should or shouldn’t have organized this type of rally; but, this does not hide the fact that Texans, as well as people everywhere, pray. Why do they pray? They pray because, deep down, they understand that prayer helps. Read More→
The prayer that heals us (dogs & cats too)
Posted by: | CommentsThe prayer that heals us (dogs and cats too) is not a matter of wishing and hoping for the best. It is based on spiritual laws. It is reliable and responsible. It makes us see more clearly how God has spiritually made us. It teaches us how loved and safe we are. Just ask Lee and Sambo.
You see, Lee loves her 12 year old dog, Sambo. Lee and Sambo live on a ranch in east Texas. The ranch is about an hour away from town. One evening, when her husband was out of town, Lee saw a five foot Timberback Rattlesnake in front of her in the yard. Lee grabbed her twenty-two rifle and started shooting. Sambo saw what was happening and rushed to protect Lee. He caught the rattler in his mouth but the snake bit him. Read More→
If it’s Tuesday, it’s San Angelo & Spinach Enchiladas
Posted by: | CommentsHow time flies. Just over a year ago, I wrote this post about my trip into West Texas. Enjoy the look back. —
Diary – Tuesday, July 20
9 AM - Meeting with Pat Attebery, Anchor KLST-TV CBS. Pat is a kind and professional woman. I explained to her that Christian Science practitioners are self-employed healers who devote themselves full time to helping others through prayer. They do not offer counseling, diagnosis, prognosis, or any physical manipulation or treatment, however, they do offer Christian Science treatment (prayerful treatment) — as explained in Mary Baker Eddy’s book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
I read where Arthur Brisbane, a New York journalist back in the 1900′s, once interviewed Eddy. He later told friends, “…it was my privilege to discover one of the keenest intellects I had ever encountered and the most gentle and sweet woman I had ever met. Her very presence was restful to me. During our conversation I mentioned this, telling her how very tired I was. She then asked me if I would like to have a Christian Science treatment and I told her I would. All I can say is that it was a most unbelievably beautiful experience….that treatment proved to me the great need in the world for Christian Science.” Read More→
Reading Medicines’ Side-Effects can be Unhealthy
Posted by: | Comments
Have you ever listened to the possible side-effects of a drug as advertised on TV and then felt queasy? Reading about those effects can make you feel bad as well, it turns out.
Fiona Macrae’s recent Health post, The health alerts that make you ill: Negative thoughts ‘can induce sickness’, at the Daily Mail, recently got my attention. In the post, she writes:
