My Remedy For Hiccups: Prayer

By

After I married my wife, Joanne, and whenever I got the hiccups, a race for relief would break out between prayer and her home-remedy of a spoonful of jelly.

If I couldn’t make the hiccups disappear before Joanne arrived with her spoon, I was supposed to swallow her sugary solution.

However, absolutely every time, prayer won out. My specific prayer caused the hiccups to completely stop before Joanne could dash to the kitchen and return with the jelly.

I don’t know if you have ever tried praying while under pressure, but it took a concerted effort to keep my thought on God’s goodness and His ability to supply me with health while hearing Joanne’s shoes on the tile floor as she ran to the kitchen.

I’d endeavor to feel a spiritual conviction of God’s love and God’s law at work, rather than intimidation, when hearing the sound of our utensil drawer opening, the silverware clanging, the drawer slamming shut, the refrigerator door opening and closing, and Joanne sprinting back with the spoonful of jelly.

Prayer’s victory after victory, eventually, became comical.

Our family-friendly contest probably won’t ever be deemed as scientific evidence of prayer’s healing ability. It may not carry much weight in the growing understanding of the relevance of spirituality’s impact on health. And I don’t even expect leading researchers, medical educators, or experts on the relationship between spirituality and health to come knocking at our door to learn more of my experiences.

Yet, to me, prayer’s success rate does tell me something. It gives an indication of the power of prayer to bring relief to mankind. It urges me forward in my growing understanding that God’s divine laws sustain us and enrich our lives, emotionally, mentally, and physically.

    Hi Keith,
Great topic and very timely for me since I was battling an all-day case of the hiccups recently. Everyone thought it was funny at first, but believe me, those incessant hiccups got annoying very quickly! It’s so easy to turn to a material “remedy”, I got lots of wacky suggestions on how be cured, but then I remembered how I was actually dealing with a mental issue, not a physical one. The thought that there are no glitches or hiccups in God’s creation of me and the universe was a much bigger help than say, drinking water from the opposite side of the glass. Needless to say, my hiccups are gone and I don’t expect them to come back!
    Thanks again! Leiza
