That well-known paraprosdokian about the tomato and the salad…

A friend of mine recently sent me a list of well-known paraprosdokians…which meant I had to look up what it is they are! The definition of a paraprosdokian is:

Figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected; frequently used in a humorous situation.

There was more than humour in one of the paraprosdokians on the list:

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

In my own spiritual journey of finding out about, and adopting, the teachings of Christian Science, I have appreciated discerning a discrepancy between knowledge and wisdom. There is always a whole lot of knowledge going around – with the advent of the internet, there is more circulating than ever – but is it always wisdom to add all that knowledge to one’s mental storehouse? Scientific Studies Prove Prayer May or May Not Work

How’s that for a definitive statement?

Depending on the methods used, the individuals involved, and (who knows) even the day of the week, “results may vary” for those trying to figure out if prayer really works as a form of complementary or alternative medicine (CAM).

One study conducted by a team of researchers at Harvard Medical School a few years ago would seem to indicate that prayer could actually be detrimental to one’s health. Check in to this blog next week and I can almost guarantee to show you a study that says the exact opposite. Read More→

If you’ve read posts here in the past, you’ve likely noticed articles about the mental nature of health and how spirituality affects lives. The great need, as I see it, is for spiritual understanding. Only spiritual answers truly get to the root or cause of problems. Only spirituality provides lasting peace.

This is why it’s encouraging to see physicians honestly question and analyze their methods and results. Through the humility it takes to be truly open for answers, will answers come. Such an odyssey leads to discoveries; to spiritual awakenings. This is what I found in the new book by Stephen Iacoboni, MD.

The Undying Soul, is a touching story of an oncologist’s search for what will provide his patients with peace as they face disease, pain, and death.

This book should stir every healer, whether MD or Christian Science practitioner, to look in the mirror and examine whether they love enough and yearn enough for what will help each of their patients. Read More→

Bill Scott

Guest Post:  Bill Scott, again, gives us something to chew on with his thought-provoking piece “Can the death of Confederate General ‘Stonewall’ Jackson shed light on the mental nature of health?”

Enjoy. ——————————————

Do the expectations and thoughts of the people around a patient influence the patient’s recovery from illness or injury?

Marking today’s 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, it seems a good time to consider the tragic death of Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson in 1863.

Reading the account of General Jackson’s death, it’s hard not to see a man expectant of his own recovery, but surrounded by those with the opposite belief. Read More→

Texans Healed

Posted by: | Comments (0)
  • Texas has a rich 130 year history of spiritual healing.
  • This is due, in large part, to Christian Science being practiced.
  • Christian Science has a proven track record as a responsible, reasonable, and effective method of prayer-based healing.
  • It is a patient centered care, — a complete approach to healthcare.

The links below will take you to accounts of healing. Each describes how a Texan has been freed from pain, disease, or danger. The physical changes took place due to spiritual transformations.

I hope you find their stories enlightening and inspiring.

Guest Post:  Our good friend from Washington State, Bill Scott, lends us another post I thought you would find interesting. Enjoy.

Last week, USA Today published an article by Tom Krattenmaker titled, Even religious freedom has limits.

The article makes an important distinction between faith healing and Christian Science. The two are often misinterpreted as being the same and they’re not.

Christian Science does not involve pleading with God to heal the sick and then accepting His will, good or bad. Nothing in Christian Science theology says it’s God’s will that anyone suffer, be sick, or die. Christian Science shows God to be entirely good, and therefore His will for each individual is only health and life. Read More→

Jane Sarasohn-Kahn reports on a recent Health 2.0 Spring Fling in her March 29 post at Disruptive Women in Heath Care.

She writes:

Wellness and disease prevention were the meta-themes … Dr. Dean Ornish told the attendees in the standing-room-only ballroom space that the joy of living is a greater motivator than the fear of death. And the 1.0 version of managing health risks has been more the latter than the former. As a result, Ornish’s two decades of research have shown that health is more a function of lifestyle choices than it is drugs and surgery. In fact, people have a “spectrum” of choices to make based on their personal preferences — not a one-size-fits-all “diet,” Dr. Ornish has learned.

Descriptions such as Sarasohn-Kahn’s show that society is beginning to look up from the deck, — ascending above materialistic forms of healthcare. Sadly, however, it may be some time before people are ready to free climb to a purely spiritual system of effective healing. Read More→
