A book: In palaces, The White House, and secret hiding places
Posted by: | CommentsI was pondering the relevance of Christian Science today, and I ran across a statement from its founder, Mary Baker Eddy, where she speaks about her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
She states, “The student of this book will tell you that his higher life is the result of his conscientious study of Science and Health in connection with the Bible. …A book that through the good it does has won its way into the palaces of emperors and kings, into the home of the President of the United States, into the chief cities and the best families in our own and in foreign lands, a book which lies beside the Bible in hundreds of pulpits and in thousands of homes, which heals the sick and reclaims sinners in court and in cottage, is not less the evangel of Christian Science than is he who practises the teachings of this book or he who studies it and thereby is healed of disease. Can such a book be ambiguous, self-contradictory, or unprofitable to mankind?”
I have felt the impact of reading the Bible and Science and Health since I learned to read. I remember sneaking into my grandfather’s secret room behind his big bed with these books. I would crawl under the bed, open the small door that lead into this attic’s hidden and special place, and with flashlight in hand, let the ideas jump off the pages and inspire me. After I all these years, the ideas are still new every day. They still inspire me. They have healed me physically, helped me mature emotionally, made me a better son, husband, and father, and helped me to help and heal others, as well.
Its interesting and comforting to realize that these two books next to my elbow at this moment have also been in palaces and The White House. And they are blessing people around the globe as I type these words.

Posted by: | Comments
Sin is driving the wrong way on a one-way street. If I turn left on 7th when I should have turned right, 7th Street is not punishing me. I just made a wrong turn.
Prayer opens my eyes to the danger of wrong turns and gets me moving in the right direction.
I pray that all your lefts be made right.

What Christmas means to a Christian Scientist
Posted by: | CommentsGuest post: Wonderful and timely piece today by our friend, Kay Stroud, the Christian Science Media Representative and Legislative Liaison for the State of Queensland, Australia.
I was in Brisbane several years ago. Its not Texas, but there’s a lot to like. In fact, I loved the city and the people. Can’t wait to go back.
Enjoy the read. Find out What Christmas means to a Christian Scientist.
——————————————-
As I was digging out the Christmas tree and decorations from the cupboard, sorting out the tinsel and testing and replacing the lamps in the Christmas tree lights today I got to thinking about what Christmas means to me.
There was a time when we were raising the children that the preparations for Christmas were nearly overwhelming – selecting the presents, putting them on lay-by and paying them off over several months, baking for and attending various Christmas parties and functions, buying presents for the children’s friends and teachers, supporting them in their end of year performances for school, ballet and music, double-checking that everyone in the family had just the right gift bought and lovingly wrapped and placed under the tree, and making preparations for Christmas holidays away at either the beach or with family, or both. The list went on, and on…..
Today, as a grandparent I have much more time for reflection and appreciation of the significance of Christmas. As a Christian Scientist, I place great importance on the life of Christ Jesus. The foretelling of the promised coming of the Messiah, the virgin birth, his ministry of teaching and healing and his later crucifixion, resurrection and ascension are key to Christian Science theology.
But to me personally, Jesus is my mentor and the guy who has shown me the way to health, happiness and harmony. Without his life and example the world would be quite a different place. He gave me a glimpse that:
The book that has explained Jesus teachings and healings as recorded in the Bible and made it clear enough to demonstrate myself is Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Without the wisdom, spiritual understanding and practical science expounded in this book I wouldn’t have such a clear understanding of my relationship to God or know how to demonstrate this understanding, which when applied has such a tangible effect—such as restored relationships, financial well-being, physical healing, character transformation and so on.
For the record, now I’m not so inclined to be caught up in the window-dressing about Christmas. It’s now not so much about presents, Santa and worshipping a dear little baby as about emulating the works of the adult Jesus in my everyday life throughout the year. And that means that I have a choice every day! When I put into practice this Science of Christianity I feel the love and joy usually reserved for Christmas every day.

Paris > Texas: Melody and health, God impelled

In 1981, I had the opportunity to perform in Paris while I was visiting Freddy Koella and his drummer, Jean-Michael. Freddy is a virtuoso on the violin and guitar. He has worked with Bob Dylan, k.d. lang, Willy Deville, Francis Cabrel, and many others.
While I was with Freddy and Jean-Michael in France, I told them I was quitting my band (The Wommack Brothers Band ) and was going into the healing ministry of Christian Science. My twin brother, Kevin, and I started the band together and for ten years, we’d performed over two hundred shows a year, performing at times with Journey, Elvis Costello, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and others.
Freddy and Jean-Michael wondered why I would stop writing and performing. Music was everything. It was the best.
I explained that I wasn’t depriving myself of the best. I’d found something even better. I told them that everything I loved about music and performing I was finding in my healing practice, as well.
When people ask me to pray, I don’t wait and hope for something good to happen. Healing is not based on blind faith.
When I grab a guitar, I expect and then play a beautiful or powerful melody, or a driving rhythm. Melody is God impelled.
Just so, when I pray, I expect and bring God’s beauty, harmony, the tones and texture of health, right to where pain and sorrow seem so solid and real. I know it sounds simplistic, however, I’ve found that troubles fade before spiritual facts, just as darkness yields to light. Health is God impelled.
Just as in music, spiritual healing is governed by rules and laws. There is a divine Principle. This living-Principle, many call God, demands order, melody.
After explaining why I was leaving the band, John-Michael showed me the back of his hand. There was a large lump on it. He asked me to pray for him. I told him I would.
Months later, Freddy and John-Michael came to Texas. When they arrived, John-Michael stuck out his hand. The lump was gone. He said, “I’ve got a scratchy throat. Do you think you can do something about this too?”

100 years later, still touching lives
Posted by: | Comments
In 1907, a New York newspaperman was sent, with other reporters, to dig up sensational stories about a woman in Concord, New Hampshire. It was said that they were a belligerent bunch of old-timers looking for a scandal. After staying in Concord for some time, they were surprised at the loving treatment they received from the woman’s workers and friends. They wanted to hold the woman up to scorn and ridicule.
The New York newsman was known as a hard-nosed reporter. For many years he suffered with a cancerous growth on his throat that left him unable to speak at times and in extreme pain. But the only scoop he took back to New York was knowledge of the healing power behind this women’s spiritual discovery. He had come looking for dirt about a woman. Yet, he went away cured because of the woman.
Here was a woman who wasn’t a punching bag, but a powerhouse, at a time when society considered men superior to women. Here was a woman who was the founder and leader of a worldwide religious movement at a time when women held only subordinate positions in Church and State. Here was a woman who was the founder and president of a teaching college at a time when women were denied equal access to education and kept out of most professions. Here was a woman who was front-page news at a time when women’s history was being suppressed. This woman was Mary Baker Eddy.
Throughout her youth and early adulthood, Eddy had struggled with poor health and financial and emotional hardship. Yet, she overcame these challenges to become, as Human Life magazine described her, “The most famous, interesting and powerful woman in America, if not in the world, today.”
One hundred years ago, December 3, 1910, Mary Baker Eddy passed away peacefully at the age of eighty-nine.
A century has passed, yet, today, her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, is still read throughout the world. The ideas in its pages continue to heal. One hundred years and still The Christian Science Monitor, the prize-winning newspaper she founded at the age of 87, is in print (and now on the Internet). One hundred years, yet, still, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, which Eddy founded and designed to “reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing,” is alive and active. A century later, the Massachusetts Metaphysical College she founded is still teaching, as well.
What a legacy. Yet, before there was a book, a newspaper, a church, or a college, Eddy discovered a Science. This Science of Christ, Christian Science, is still inspiring and healing people. Her writings explain her Science of spiritual healing. Her church promotes, protects, and publishes the Science. Her college prepares teachers of this Science. Her newspaper provides unbiased news reports that allow its readers to pray about world conditions.
Eddy’s life, love, and work influenced the world of her time. Right now, they are still touching lives.
Today, especially, I believe you will enjoy exploring The Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of Humanity.
